Best Fountain Pumps & Why

So whats the best fountain pump to strap o onto your fountain?

Its the one that you clean regularly!

Ha! Trick question homie! But its really that simple in most of the cases we see. Any properly serviced pump will last longer than a unit that’s not serviced regularly. Those are just simple facts folks.

But there are different styles of pumps and fountains where one type of a pump is a better fit over another. So lets take a look at some for the most common options shall we ;p

First, lets cover a few of the basic fountain styles. These aren’t all of them, but these are the most common ones we see. We’re also focusing mainly on residential fountains and not including large commercial systems to make things a lil more simple k?

Fountain Styles:

*Standalone Multi-tier Fountains (what you imagine a typical fountain looks like):

*Water Walls:

*Urn / Girona / Bubbler / Overflow Fountains:

*Waterfall Systems:

*Bird Baths:

*Tabletop Fountains:

Now for the Pumps:

*Low Pressure submersible pumps

*High Pressure submersible pumps

*High Pressure external pumps

*Low pro-file pumps

*Micro pumps

Now with these 2 lists. We’re going to match up the fountains with their best pump

Standalone Multi-tier Fountains:

This one could honestly use a lot of options. The size of the fountain will play a key role in what type of pump. Most systems do great with a standard low-pressure submersible pump. These are typically easy to maintain, arent large, have a low electrical draw, and are easier to replace when needed (typically). And for systems where there will be some type of filtration system, and/or the pump has to be positioned outside or away from the fountain; we always recommend high-pressure external pumps. Little  Giant makes a great line of small steel pumps which can blow water far far away. Like into another dimension almost. And for larger systems, or larger distances, larger motors would work best. Brands like Hayward and Pentair make great  motors. These larger pumps are typically installed or come with skimmer baskets, which will add a layer of protection to the pumps and they’ll last a bit longer with proper care. One thing to consider with these styles of pumps is their electrical draw. They suck up a lotta juice! So be careful ;p

Water Walls:

Most home water walls do best with submersible high-pressure pumps. These types of pumps can be relatively small for how much water they move at large distances, easy to maintain, and will provide enough pressure to move enough water up the height of the fountain as well as enough pressure to spread the water flow evenly along the length of the fountain.

Urn / Girona / Bubbler / Overflow Fountains:

The name of the game with these fountains is “slow your roll grandma”. And thats why these babies do best with low pressure submersible pumps.  Once you get a nice even flow all around the feature, you wont wanna push more. Some systems can work where the water squirts up a lil, but you really want to eliminate any splash with these types of a fountains.

Waterfall Systems:

These are what we classify as ponds w/ no koi or plant life. These systems can be designed as a koi pond, and do best with any time of a hi-pressure pump. External or external, the main game here is to maximize your flow throughout the water feature. Higher flow rates = better filtration and better filtration = cleaner waterfall 😀

Bird Baths and Table Top Fountains:

These 2 take the tiniest of pumps out there. Low pressure, eenie, weeie, pateenie, micro ones.

Ad that’s it Folks.
