Great pond plants for algae control

Besides regular maintenance and a proper Filtration system w UV sterilization for algae control, pond plants are a great option that are often overlooked.

Plants suck up nutrients from the water to grow. They reduce nitrates and other nutrients which feed algae growth. So lower nutrients means less algae. It’s why water changes are crucial. But is a bit hard to do a 50% water change on a 5000g pond.  Which is where plants come in. Having a lot of plants will suck out the nutrients and starve the algae.

So here some plants I recommend, let me hit you guys with a list. BAAM!

1)Cats Tail (Typha): This plant has a rhizome, and rhizome plants suck up nutrients like crazy… It also grow’s super fast and does a great job filling in your pond.

2) Iris: This is a beautiful plant and comes in a lot of different colors.

3)Lilies: They create great shade to block out the sun from creating algae and has very beautiful blooming flowers with lots of different colors. There are also a few types of lilies. Ones for hot weather, one for colder temps, and ones that flower during the day, and ones that flower at night.

4)Papyrus: Super hardy plant with wonderful colors. There’s a dwarf species and a regular species, one for each size of a pond.

5)Oxygenating plants also make a great nutrients export: Jungle Vals, Anachris, Hornwort, Bacopa, Pennywort, Hairgrass, Creeping Jenny, and a few other.

6)Last but not least, Floating plants: Hyacinths, water lettuce, frogbit, and the plant everybody loves duckweed hahahaha. There are a few other floating plants that help with controlling algae growth .. main thing is water changes and weekly or bi-weekly maintenance.. I’m out!
