The Problem with MDF

MDF…….This has to be one of the most asinine things in the aquarium industry. If you re not familiar with what mdf is, it stand for medium-density fibreboard, and is basically wood pulp that’s been glued together with a number of different agents.

I’d love to meet the douche who thought it was a great idea to start using mdf with aquariums. Like really? But anyway, I’d love to live to the day that where this horrible idea dies and mdf is never again used. WEEEE! But until that day, I’d like to quickly point out everything that’s wrong with this crap, i mean MDF.

1 – Its MDF and looks horrible and tacky! Why would you want a tacky looking aquarium?

If its a gag gift I guess, but besides that, MDF is the ugliest looking material to make anything out of. Everytime I see an MDF stand, it makes me feel like I’m shopping at a cheap outlet mall,in Alabama, in 1978. Its shit

2 – It peels. The laminating covering on mdv stand will peel, and baaaad. Not just a little corner, but at ever seem and every edge, it will peel.

3 – One of the gluing agents that’s sometimes still used is UL, urea formaldehyde. This shits bad! It will slowly release formaldehyde gas into your home.  “When formaldehyde is present in the air, some individuals may experience adverse effects such as watery eyes; burning sensations in the eyes, nose, and throat; coughing; wheezing; nausea; and skin irritation. Repeated exposure to formaldehyde may cause bronchitis or skin and asthma-like allergy. Some people are very sensitive to formaldehyde, whereas others have no reaction to the same level of exposure. There is limited evidence that formaldehyde may damage the developing fetus and affect female fertility.” – eclosh.org

4 – Then theres the fact that it’s a bit harder and less aesthetically pleasing to properly mount/drill equipment into mdf. Due to its consistency, you can’t simply screw something in with a regular screw, you have to use bolts. So if you want to mount something on the door side, you’re going to have a ugly ass bolt sticking out the outer side of your door.

And finally!

5!!! – This shit will fall apart on you. MDF will literally warp and crumble when its exposed to moisture and high humidity environments. So I’m going on record that putting a giant box of water, on top of a stand which is made of a material that will crumble when wet,is not the best fucking idea.

Please do yourself a huge favor and never buy cheap mdf aquarium furniture ever again! You’re welcome 😀
