My Opinion on the best Reef Clean Up Crew
Published Feb 12, 2021
First thing first. In a reef tank, a lot of reef keepers make the mistake of waiting on adding there cleaner crew to their reef. Most people usually wait until they see a lot much algae growth before they add cleaners, which turns battling algae into an uphill battle. They are not meant to clean up like that, a cleaning crew is for preventing outbreaks of algae before they begin. Something’s to consider: Certain algae eaters only eat only one type of algae, so keeping a mix of different critters is key. And preventing algae depends on your water parameters and also using RODI water to make your saltwater is one of the big issues you should use RODI water …
MY OPINION ON GREAT REEF CLEANING CREW:
1) The Tiny Blue Leg Hermit Crab= Great for getting between rocks for eating over feed food and also eats hair algae.
2) Nassarius Snails= Nassarius snails do not eat algae, they’re scavengers. They’ll eat any uneaten foods and their sand snails, so they’re great for keeping your sand bed nice and clean.
3) Trochus Snails= I like this snail because it goes after almost any type of algae including some of your bacteria slime like red slime also this type of snail can flip itself right over if it falls on his back… I called this snail the King of all snails.
4) Emerald Crabs= Great for eating bubble algae and short hair algae . The only thing sometimes if they run out of food they can go after fish or polyps all though I never had that issue myself.
5) Cerinth Snails= This snail is a very tiny snail. They’re great for getting into small crevices also great for eating hair algae.
6) Lawnmower Blenny = Great reef fish for hair algae control. Must have. Period.
7) Sea Urchins (pincushion or tuxedo urchin)= This invert is a very aggressive algae eater .. the only thing he’s bulky and may knock down corals.
8) Tangs = Most tangs will eat algae if the tank is not over fed. The only downside is that they do need a larger aquarium, 100g min, in order to live comfortably.
